Client: District of Houston, BC
The purpose of this project was to show a potential redevelopment of an existing commercial property in the downtown by building a parklette. The parklette replaces existing parking in the downtown with a temporary public space. The District hired SPD to develop images of the parklette to use at a public meeting to generate discussion on the use of commercial space, public space and parking in the downtown. The parklette design was influenced by the railway history in Houston. The parklette design uses wood shaped like railway ties to frame the space and provide seating. Native species were used as landscaping elements in the parklette. The parklette is designed in four pieces and can grow over time as the space becomes more popular. New pieces can be trucked in on a small trailer and easily placed with a forklift.
